Maritza Miranda, a Class of 2025 aerospace engineering major, was selected to receive Aviation Week Network’s 2023 Wings Club Foundation Scholarship. Miranda is one of only 17 students from across the globe selected for the award which is given to select students pursuing careers in aviation. The awards were presented on Oct. 20 at the foundation’s annual black-tie awards gala in New York.

After graduation, Miranda plans to contribute the skills and knowledge she gains through studying rocketry and simulation at UT Austin to the space industry’s goal of establishing bases on the Moon.

We asked Miranda a few more questions, including her experience as a student at UT Austin, what it means to be a Wings Club Scholar, how she spends her free time and more.

Why did you choose to major in aerospace engineering at UT Austin?

I chose to major in aerospace engineering at UT Austin because of my deep-seated passion for aerospace technology and exploration. The university's strong reputation in the field of aerospace engineering was a major factor that influenced my decision. The program consistently ranks among the top in the nation, and the success of its alumni in the aerospace industry is a testament to the quality of education offered. Ultimately, my decision to major in aerospace engineering at UT Austin was driven by a combination of academic excellence, a commitment to innovation, and a genuine passion for contributing to advancements in aerospace technology. I knew that UT Austin's program would provide the comprehensive education and practical experiences needed to pursue a successful career in the aerospace industry.

What does the Wings Club scholarship mean to you?

The Wings Club scholarship holds profound significance for me as it represents far more than financial support for my education. This scholarship is a symbol of recognition and encouragement, acknowledging my dedication to the aerospace industry and my commitment to pursuing excellence in this dynamic field. All in all, the Wings Club scholarship is a source of inspiration and empowerment.

Tell us about your involvement with extracurricular projects and organizations.

I am involved with the Texas Rocket Engineering Lab (TREL) as a recently appointed Hotfire Test Co-Lead. This role consists of going out to our engine test site located at Firefly Aerospace's test site in Bertram, Texas. A workday there mainly consists of maintaining the stand in terms of torquing fluid lines, pressurizing the stand, checking for leaks, and ensuring that all components are working properly. This semester we have been focusing on getting the test stand ready for a second hotfire of TREL's liquid bi-propellant engine TXE-2.

I am also involved with the University Catholic Center choir on campus. I have been a part of this choir for two years, and I love being able to make music with people that I consider family. It is such a nice break from the STEM part of my life, and I find it very therapeutic. We performed Fauré's Requiem this November, which I was excited about.

Have you participated in any internships?

This past summer, I interned at Aeroclub Barcelona-Sabadell in Barcelona, Spain as a Simulation Intern. I got to work with numerous airplane simulators such as a Boeing 737 flight simulator and make sure that they were in good shape for the student pilots using them. This involved testing the software as well as the hardware of the simulators. I also got to utilize my Spanish speaking and writing skills to collaborate with pilots to create a flight path calculator that helps increase time efficiency when creating flight plans for the day.

Where is your favorite place to study?

I have been spending a lot of time in ASE lobby and the 5th floor of the GLT this semester, so I would say that those are my favorite places to study.

What do you like to do in your free time when not studying?

When I have the time, I love to go kayaking and go to the gym. Since Austin is the music capital of the world, I also love going to concerts or watching musicals at Bass Concert Hall!

Anything else you’d like to mention?

I would like to thank one of the ASE advisors, Renee Babcock, for making all of this possible. Her unwavering support these past two years have allowed me to truly reach for the stars.
