Professor Emeritus John Westkaemper Passes Away

Professor Emeritus John C. Westkaemper, a longtime faculty member of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics (ASE/EM) in the Cockrell School of Engineering, passed away in San Antonio, TX on April 18, 2021. 

Westkaemper served on the ASE/EM faculty from 1967 until his retirement in 1992. He taught the department’s capstone aircraft design course almost every semester for 25 years. In the early 1970s, he designed and built a large subsonic wind tunnel for the Experimental Aerodynamics Laboratory with the help of student assistants.

An alumnus of UT Austin, Westkaemper earned a B.S. in aeronautical engineering in 1947, an M.S. in mechanical engineering in 1959 and a  Ph.D. in aerospace engineering in 1967. He also established the John C. Westkaemper Scholarship in Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics.

A private burial will be held at the Center Point Cemetery.
