Mark Maughmer II, Technical Staff Assistant V for the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics (ASE/EM), was presented with the Cockrell School of Engineering’s Staff Excellence Award on May 14, 2013. He was one of six non-teaching personnel to receive the award.

The awards recognize selected non-teaching personnel who have distinguished themselves and who have contributed significantly to the effectiveness of the teaching, advising, counseling and research efforts of the Cockrell School. These awards honor dedicated individuals who are recognized by their supervisors and peers as having performed exceptional and meritorious service.

In 2006, Maughmer was hired to support the undergraduate student Design/Build/Fly project, which is now a highly regarded nationally recognized team. He continues to work with these students annually as a counselor and mentor and serves as the pilot at international competitions.

“Mark instituted a culture than emphasized team continuity, design and build education, technical excellence and professionalism that has made DBF one of the most popular student projects in the department,” Air Systems Director Armand Chaput said. “To say that the DBF students appreciate his dedication and commitment would be a gross understatement.”

Maughmer’s other duties include working closely with students in labs, where he guides and assists with the design and fabrication of aircraft and rockets. He is also responsible for ordering supplies for the majority of the ASE/EM labs, preparing lab specimens and materials, and training teaching assistants how to use equipment in various labs.

He says he enjoys working with students the most.

“Working with students is my favorite part of the job,” Maughmer said. “Watching students use what they learn in the labs and applying them to projects as well as out in the field is very rewarding.”

Maughmer received his BS in in aerospace engineering from Penn State in 2004. In his spare time, he plays the fiddle in a local band. He enjoys the live music scene in Austin as well as the great outdoors.
