Leszek Demkowicz, ICES assistant director, professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics, and leader of the ICES Electromagnetics and Acoustics Group served as the local organizer, accompanied by Pavel Bochev, distinguished member of the technical staff of Sandia National Laboratories.
Minimizing the inevitable losses of information that occur when computer models must convert infinite dimensional mathematical models into finite dimensional algebraic equations is the goal of attendees of the workshop, says Demkowicz. This specifically involves two communities in computational science: representatives of the least squares methods, and those working with Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin (DPG) finite element methods.
“The workshop aims at connecting leaders in developing theories, methods and new mathematics in these separate areas, and facilitate communication and exchange of ideas among them,” says Demkowicz.

In addition to Demkowicz and Bochev, Jay Gopalakrishnan of Portland State University and Max Gunzberger of Florida State University served as the workshop’s scientific committee.
