Leszek DemkowiczProfessor Leszek Demkowicz has been recognized with two symposia in honor of his 60th birthday and his prestigious career this summer.

Algorithms for Wave Propagation: A Symposium in Honor of the 60th Birthday of Professor Leszek Demkowicz will be held at the 12th U.S. National Congress on Computational Mechanics in Raleigh, North Carolina, July 22-25.

High order finite element methods: A mini-symposium celebrating Leszek Demkowicz's contributions was held at Brunel University in London during the Fourteenth Conference on the Mathematics of Finite Elements and Applications, June 11-14, with an early evening lecture by J. Tinsley Oden on June 10.

Demkowicz is world renowned for his work on numerical wave propagation, including acoustics, elastodynamics and electromagnetics. His research combines applied mathematics, continuum and structural mechanics and computational methods for partial differential equations with an emphasis on finite element and boundary element methods.

During the 2012-13 academic year, Demkowicz was invited to give several lectures and seminars, including the Oberwolfach workshop on Efficient and Robust Approximation of the Helmholtz Equation, Nov. 25, anotherOberwolfach workshop on Computational Electromagnetics and Acoustics, Jan. 21, a keynote talk at the Advances in Computational Mechanics, A Conference Celebrating the 70th Birthday of Thomas J.R. Hughes, Feb. 2013, and a keynote talk at the Fifth International Conference on Coupled Problems in Science and Engineering in June of this year.

Demkowicz holds the J.H. Herring Centennial Professorship in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and is the assistant director of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES).
