Professor Noel Clemens was invited to give a series of lectures as part of the prestigious Midwest Mechanics Seminar Series. Each year the series, which began in 1958, invites four outstanding researchers in mechanics to deliver nine lectures during two one-week tours.

Participating institutions include Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin (Tour A) and Purdue, Illinois, IIT, Iowa State and Minnesota (Tour B).

Clemens presented two lectures — one on the topic of shock wave / boundary layer interactions; the other on flame flashback in swirl combustors. He completed Tour B this October and will complete Tour A in spring 2019.

Clemens’ research interests include supersonic unsteady flow, turbulent combustion and mixing, and laser-based measurement techniques. His current work focuses on 3D shock wave /boundary layer interactions, inlet unstart, high-speed flow control, flashback in high pressure combustors, turbulent combustion with non-equilibrium, soot production with alternative jet fuels, and high-temperature ablation.

He holds the Bob R. Dorsey Professorship in Engineering and currently serves as the ASE/EM Department Chair.
