Behcet AkicmeseBehcet Acikmese has been elected to the grade of Associate Fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). He will be presented with a pin and certificate at a dinner in January 2014 in conjunction with the AIAA SciTech Forum.

Acikmese's research interests include real-time optimization for advanced autonomous control systems, robust/nonlinear control, control of distributed systems and their applications in aerospace engineering.

His research is applicable to planetary landing, exploration of comets and asteroids with autonomous spacecraft, autonomous aerial vehicles and formation flying. His research group developed the first real-time trajectory optimization method for planetary landing, which was recently demonstrated in flight experiments on a NASA test rocket.

Ackimese joined the department in August 2012.
