Professors Mary F. Wheeler and Thomas J.R. Hughes gave invited lectures at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM 2010) in Hyderabad, India, August 19-27, 2010. Professor Wheeler gave an invited Sectional Lecture entitled "The Role of Computational Science in Protecting the Environment: Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide," and Professor Hughes gave an invited Plenary Lecture entitled "Isogeometric Analysis."

The ICM, hosted by the International Mathematics Union, is the "world cup" of mathematics. It is held every four years, covers all fields of mathematics, and attracts more attendees than any other mathematics meeting. During the 1900 congress in Paris, David Hilbert announced his famous list of 23 unsolved problems. Being selected as an invited lecturer at an ICM is considered a significant honor in the world of mathematics.

Dr. Wheeler holds the Ernest and Virginia Cockrell Chair in Engineering. Dr. Hughes holds the Computational and Applied Mathematics Chair III. Both are affiliated with the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES).
