Professor Philip Varghese was selected to receive the 2012 Senate of College Councils Professor of the Year.
The award is given to one tenured or tenure-track professor at The University of Texas at Austin who demonstrates outstanding teaching ability and a commitment to students and the university. The winning professor is chosen by a selection panel and is selected based on the quality of responses to the application questions. In addition, careful consideration is given to the nominee’s personal achievements, classroom interactions and character.
Varghese was also selected as the Senate of College Councils Professor of the Month in October of 2011, which automatically qualified him as a nominee for the Professor of the Year award.
The award was presented to Varghese during Faculty Appreciation Week at a Texas-A&M women’s basketball game. He received a plaque and a $1,000 honorarium courtesy of the Senate of College Councils.
Varghese is a University of Texas Distinguished Teaching Professor and has received numerous teaching awards throughout his career. He currently serves as Chairman of the ASE/EM Department and is Director of the Center for Aeromechanics Research. He holds the Stanley P. Finch Centennial Professorship in Engineering.
