Noel Clemens has been elected Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) by the Division of Fluid Dynamics (DFD). The number of fellows elected each year is limited to 0.5% of the APS membership. The citation for his fellowship reads: “for the development and application of innovative experimental methods leading to fundamental understanding of shear flow mixing, turbulent flame structure and supersonic unsteady flows.” Clemens will be recognized during an awards ceremony at the APS-DFD meeting in November of this year.
Clemens’ research focuses on supersonic and hypersonic flows, turbulent mixing and combustion. Motivations for his research include improving the performance of supersonic aircraft, jet engines, and combustion systems used for electrical power generation. His work is performed in the laboratory, such as the Mach 5 wind tunnel, and his research group makes extensive use of laser-based measurements.
Clemens has served on the ASE/EM faculty since 1993 and currently serves as the department chair. For more information about his research, visit the Flowfield Imaging Lab website.
