Aerospace engineering graduate Maximilian (Max) Bremer was selected to receive the Spring 2014 Cockrell School of Engineering Outstanding Scholar/Leader Award. Each semester, only one engineering undergraduate student is selected to receive the esteemed award. Dean Sharon Wood presented Bremer with the award during the Cockrell School's commencement on the evening of Friday, May 16.

Since Bremer's first year as an undergraduate in aerospace engineering, he has shown excellence in academics. He regularly took over the maximum number of hours each semester so that he could complete two degrees in four years – one in aerospace engineering with honors and the other in applied mathematics. Bremer's hard work paid off by graduating first in his aerospace engineering class.

Throughout his undergraduate career, Bremer broadened his horizons by participating in a variety of summer internships. He also worked as a research assistant under the direction of Prof. Clint Dawson at the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) where they developed novel algorithms for predicting hurricane storm surge models. This research led to Bremer's completion of his honors thesis within Computational Hydraulics Group.

In addition to academics and research, Bremer has been involved as a leader within department through the student chapter of Sigma Gamma Tau (SGT) and the senior design courses. He served as pledge officer, academic chair and treasurer in SGT and as variant air system team lead in the senior aircraft design class. Because of Bremer's leadership excellence during his four years here, he was often called upon to assist with numerous department events and activities.

Bremer has been accepted to the University of Cambridge where will pursue graduate studies in applied mathematics. He plans to return to UT to complete a Ph.D. at ICES.
