Stelios Kyriakides, Director of the Center for Research in Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Materials and Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, has recently been selected to assume the role of Editor of the International Journal of Solids and Structures, one of the leading journals in its field. The appointment is in recognition of Dr. Kyriakides’ reputation for excellence in the area of solids and structures. He will share this role jointly with David Hills of The University of Oxford.

The new editors write that “the scope of the journal will remain essentially the same: to provide an international forum for communicating original work on all aspects of the mechanics of solids and structures and their interaction with other media. This encompasses all scales, macro, micro, and nano, and all solid materials, inorganic and organic. We intend to publish papers that are of the very highest scientific standards.”

Dr. Kyriakides joined the University of Texas at Austin in 1980. His major technical interests are in the mechanics of solids with an emphasis on instability at both the macro (structural) and micro (material) levels. He has pioneered the area of propagating instabilities in solids, structures and materials. Such instabilities have been shown to govern the mechanical behavior of structures of larger size such as offshore pipelines, oil well casings and tunnel linings, long panels in pressure loaded structures, etc.

Professor Kyriakides has published over 100 technical articles and reports and has received numerous honors and awards throughout his career. He is a fellow of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Academy of Mechanics.
