Professor Thomas Hughes of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences received the Slovak University of Technology Medal for his outstanding, sustained contributions in the field of computational mechanics.
The Medal is awarded by the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava mechanical engineering faculty, the Slovak Society for Mechanics and the Central European Association for Computational Mechanics.
Hughes accepted the medal in Slovakia when he presented a lecture entitled "Patient Specific Computer Modeling and the Predictive Paradigm in Cardiovascular Medicine."
Hughes, a professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics, holds the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Chair in Computational and Applied Mathematics. He is an elected member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas. He is a foreign member of the Royal Society of London, the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere. Hughes has also received honorary doctorates from Northwestern University and the universities of Louvain, Pavia, Padua, Trondheim and A Coruña.
Hughes is one of the most widely cited authors in Computer Science according to international technical publishers Thomson Reuters.
