Thomas Hughes

Professor Thomas Hughes was selected to receive the 2015-16 University Co-operative Society’s Career Research Excellence Award. The award is presented annually to one UT Austin faculty member or staff researcher who has maintained a superior research program over many years and consists of a plaque and check in the amount of $10,000. This year’s award will be announced at a banquet hosted by the University Co-operative Society in October.

Hughes has made many significant contributions to the field of computational engineering and science over the years, and has become an international leader and statesman within the computational engineering and science community.

He is world-renowned for bringing engineering principles and practices to medicine and has been working on many exciting problems in this subject. Among these contributions is the development of computational fluid dynamics and fluid-structure interaction technology for large-scale simulation of problems in cardiovascular medicine. This extraordinary technology is now being marketed for treating coronary artery disease diagnosis. Hughes has also made fundamental contributions in the area of turbulence, especially in the study of Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) theory, in which he has made significant advances that have been recognized worldwide.

Hughes has published over 500 works on computational mechanics and has been identified by Thomson-Reuters as a Highly Cited Researcher in Computer Science. He has received numerous national and international awards for his research and is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, the Academy of Medicine, Engineering and Science of Texas, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a Foreign Member of the Royal Society of London, the Istituto Lombardo Accademia di Scienze e Lettere, and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He has also received honorary doctorates from the universities of Louvain, Pavia, Padua, Trondheim, Northwestern, and A Coruña.

Hughes holds the Peter O'Donnell, Jr. Chair in Computational and Applied Mathematics within the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) and is a professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics.
