Clint Dawson Elected Fellow of Society for Industrial Applied Mathematics

Clint DawsonClint Dawson, a professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics in the Cockrell School of Engineering, has been elected a fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) for his “distinguished contributions to the disciplines of applied mathematics, computational science and related fields.”

SIAM is an international organization dedicated to solving real-world problems by fostering the development of applied mathematical and computational methodologies. Dawson is one of only 30 new fellows selected to the society this year.

Dawson’s research interests include numerical methods for partial differential equations, specifically flow and transport problems in computational fluid dynamics; scientific computing and parallel computing; finite element analysis, discontinuous Galerkin methods; shallow water systems, hurricane storm surge modeling, rainfall-induced flooding; ground water systems, flow in porous media, geochemistry; data assimilation, parameter estimation, uncertainty and error estimation.

Some of Dawson’s recent work includes collaborating on a $13.7 National Science Foundation Grant to create a natural hazards engineering center at the Cockrell School of Engineering. His team also contributed data to a recent ProPublica/Texas Tribune story that details the potential for devastation of the Texas coastline.

Dawson leads UT Austin’s Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES) Computational Hydraulics Group. He serves as associate chair of the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and graduate advisor of the ICES Computational Sciences, Engineering and Mathematics graduate program. He holds the John McKetta Centennial Chair in Engineering.
