Brian O'Connor

Brian O’Connor, a Plan II honors and aerospace engineering senior, has been selected to participate in an internship opportunity with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He will spend two and a half months this summer participating in the Phillips Scholars Program where he will support the Vibration Control of Tensioned Precision Structures Project.

The Phillips Scholars program provides highly performing undergraduate students with the opportunity to participate in hands-on research and technology projects with AFRL engineers and scientists while contributing to the future vision of space exploration and directed energy systems. During the internship, students discover real-world applications of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), receive mentoring from world-renowned scientists and engineers and are offered professional development opportunities through seminars, networking and more.

Scholars are required write a technical report documenting their research upon conclusion of the summer internship. They will present their work at the AFRL Scholar Poster Session to the Directorate Leadership, Mentors and fellow Scholars.

O’Connor works for Professor Glenn Lightsey in the Texas Spacecraft Lab on satellite missions such as ARMADILLO which recently took first place in the CubeSat class at the national University Nanosatellite Program.
