Stelios Kyriakides, ASE/EM Professor and Director of the Center for Research in Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Materials, has been elected as President of the American Academy of Mechanics (AAM) for 2006. Kenneth Liechti, ASE/EM Professor, has been elected to serve as the Secretary of the Fellows.

The objective of the AAM is the advancement of the science and profession of mechanics, and includes disciplines involved in the modeling and study of the response of inanimate and animate matter to forces and environmental effects. The Academy particularly encourages interactions of researchers in the U.S. and Canada with Latin American colleagues.

Professor Kyriakides’ research interests include instability in solids and structures and modeling of nonlinear behavior and failure of solids. He joined the Cockrell School of Engineering 1980. Dr. Kyriakides was recently selected as editor of the International Journal of Solids and Structures.

Professor Liechti’s research focuses on the deformation and failure mechanisms in multilayered materials and structures using a combination of experimental and numerical stress analytical techniques. He joined the Cockrell School of Engineering in 1982. Dr. Liechti was recently selected to serve on the board of editors for the International Journal of Solids and Structures.
