Leszek DemkowiczLeszek Demkowicz, ASE/EM professor and director of the ICES Electromagnetics and Acoustics Group, is an invited speaker at the Richard-von-Mises-Lecture, a highly prestigious annual lecture occurring on June 12 at the Humboldt-University of Berlin.

The lecture honors Richard von Mises, a mathematician who made fundamental contributions in applied mathematics, probability theory and statistics in the mid-20th century.

Demkowicz's lecture, titled "Finite Elements for Maxwell Equation," honors the 150th creation anniversary of Maxwell's Equations by presenting Demkowicz's "personal story" of applying the equations in finite element methods. Demkowicz has applied such methods to difficult engineering problems including modeling of induction tools and scattering.

Annette Vogt, professor at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, is the other invited lecture speaker. Her talk is titled "Statistics in Berlin between Ladislaus von Bortkiewicz (1868-1931) and Richard von Mises (1883-1953)."

Sixty-three participants are registered to attend the event.
