NASA began studying human Mars missions in 1962. At that time it was a foregone conclusion that a Mars mission would follow soon after the completion of the first lunar landing. A dichotomy of opinion arose over the costs of the venture that has endured to the present time, and is at the root of the arguments for and against human Mars missions.
