Aerospace Research, Development, and Applications at Sandia National Laboratories
Wednesday, April 24, 2013,  4:30PM -  5:30PM
Basil Hassan, PhD
Manager of the Aerospace Systems Analysis Department of the Integrated Military Systems Center, Sandia National Laboratories

The seminar will focus on aerospace-related research, development, and applications conducted at Sandia National Laboratories. Sandia supports a wide variety of applications in defense, energy, and national security. Areas ranging from fundamental R&D in fluid mechanics and heat transfer, code development, experimental testing, all the way to full scale flight testing will be discussed.

About Dr. Hassan:
Dr. Basil Hassan is Manager of the Aerospace Systems Analysis Department of the Integrated Military Systems Center at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico. He received his BS (1988), MS (1990), and PhD (1993) degrees in Aerospace Engineering from North Carolina State University. Dr. Hassan manages applied aerospace engineering work, in particular flight dynamics analysis and range safety, as applied to a variety of flight vehicles.  He has been employed at Sandia since 1993, both as a Senior and Principal Member of Technical Staff (1993-2002) and Manager (2002-present). He has primarily worked in research and development in the area of non-equilibrium computational fluid dynamics with application to aerodynamics and aerothermodynamics of high-speed flight vehicles.  He has worked in ablation for hypersonic re-entry vehicles, drag reduction for low-speed ground transportation vehicles, and high-velocity oxygen fuel thermal sprays.  He has overseen all aspects of aerospace R&D, and applications work, including the management of Sandia wind tunnels. Dr. Hassan is a Fellow in AIAA in and has been active in the Institute for over 29 years.  He has served in a variety of leadership roles across the Institute.  He is currently on the AIAA Board of Directors, serving in the position of Vice President for Technical Activities.
