ASE Graduate Becomes First Female
Astronaut from School

Stephanie Wilson, MS ASE, 1992, was selected for astronaut training in August 1996 and after two years of training, qualified for flight assignment as a mission specialist. In a December 12, 2002 press release NASA announced that she will fly on STS 120 which is scheduled to launch in 2004.

Stephanie worked with ASE faculty members Roy Craig and Bob Bishop while here at UT. Her research focused on the control and modeling of large, flexible space structures. She is currently assigned to the Astronaut Office CAPCOM Branch at NASA, working in Mission Control as prime communicator with on-orbit crews. Stephanie makes an important mark in history by becoming the Cockrell School of Engineering's first woman astronaut.
