The STEM Enhancement in Earth Science (SEES) High School Summer Internship Program has been awarded a NASA Group Achievement Award for 2023. SEES, a nationally competitive STEM program for high school students hosted by The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Space Research (CSR), exposes selected interns to Earth and space research.

The NASA award recognizes accomplishments for contributions to its mission to groups of government or non-government personnel. Two CSR staff members were also awarded certificates of appreciation for their dedicated service to NASA from the organization’s Science Mission Directorate: Margaret Baguio, program manager for education and outreach, and Celena Miller, project manager for education and outreach. The awards were presented at this year’s NASA SciAct Annual Meeting in Virginia on Nov. 16.

The SEES outreach program is coordinated through a joint effort between UT CSR and the Texas Space Grant Consortium. Funding is provided by NASA under its Science Activation (SciAct) program, which aims to connect learners of all ages with science in ways that activate minds and promote a deeper understanding of the world and beyond.

Summer internships through SEES are offered to motivated high school students who have an interest in pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). The interns work alongside UT Austin researchers and NASA subject matter experts analyzing and visualizing satellite data. This content knowledge, coupled with hands-on experiences, allows interns to gain experience in authentic NASA research through field investigation and data analysis.

Interns are selected on the basis of their academic records, written application that includes answers to essay questions, introduction video, recommendation form, and interest in STEM. The deadline for submitting an application for the summer 2024 internship program is February 24, 2024.
