Adele Magnani

Adele Magnani, an undergraduate advisor in aerospace engineering at The University of Texas at Austin, was selected to receive the 2014-15 “Taking Initiative to Create Positive Change” award from the university’s Academic Counselors Association (ACA). She was selected for her work with the Engineering Mechanics (EM) Tutor Center and the collaboration for the online tutoring program.

Magnani serves as supervisor of the EM Tutor Center in addition to advising aerospace engineering undergraduate students throughout the year. The new center includes an option for online tutoring to make tutor services available and more accessible for all students. Goals of the tutor center include assisting students with progress in EM courses, lowering the Q, D, F, W rate, and ensuring students are receiving positive tutor sessions.

When Magnani received the award, she said she “felt grateful; not for the recognition, but for the fact that an initiative that is part of our department was noticed.” She said she is thankful to be a part of a supportive team and that winning an award such is this is motivation and will result in spreading the work about EM tutoring and encourage more students to take advantage of these services.

Magnani began working in the ASE/EM department in March 2013. She earned a MS degree in criminal justice, but said she chose to be an advisor because she enjoys working in a college setting while helping students reach their goals.
