On September 24, 2007, Professor Thomas J.R. Hughes will be awarded with the Laurea Honoris Causa in Civil Engineering by Pavia University in Italy. The award recognizes Dr. Hughes’ fundamental work in computational mechanics in solid, structural and fluid mechanics, with special emphasis to his recent work in turbulent flows, stabilized and multiscale as well as Isogeometric Analysis. Pavia is one of the most reputed Engineering facilities in Italy and is well known as one of the oldest universities in Europe.

Dr. Hughes holds the Computational and Applied Mechanics Chair and joined the Department as Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics in Fall 2002. He has served as a faculty member at UC Berkeley, the California Institute of Technology, and Stanford University, where he served as Chairman of the Division of Applied Mechanics and Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Professor Hughes is an internationally known expert in computational engineering and sciences and has published over 300 scientific works on computational mechanics, and is the author or editor of eighteen books.
