Dr. Stearman specializes in structural dynamics and aeroelasticity with current emphasis on the development of analytical/experimental nonlinear system identification techniques. He has served on the Cockrell School of Engineering faculty since 1966 and previously taught at the University of Kansas. He has six years of industrial experience and has published more than 70 technical articles and reports.

Dr. Stearman was honored (April 1999) with a Computerworld Smithsonian Award in the Transportation Division for his Team's innovative work on utilizing the structural acoustics sounds on a cockpit voice recorder to identify the cause of an airliner accident. This technique has the potential for use as a health monitoring system in aircraft, spacecraft, and other transportation systems. Mr. Casey Powell, COE of Sequent Computers, nominated Dr. Stearman for the award.
