Dr. Hughes joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics in the fall 2002 semester. He has served as a faculty member at UC Berkeley, the California Institute of Technology, and Stanford University, where he served as Chairman of the Division of Applied Mechanics and Chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Hughes is an internationally known expert in computational engineering and sciences and has published over 300 scientific works on computational mechanics, and is the author or editor of eighteen books.
