- Spaceborne laser altimetry, especially GLAS on ICESat
- Airborne laser altimetry
- Space Geodesy, including Global Positioning System (GPS) and laser ranging
- Spacecraft dynamics, including orbit and attitude determination
- Satellite mission design
- Applications of satellites to Earth system studies
Dr. Schutz's research interests are Earth satellite applications, including the Global Positioning System (GPS), precision orbit determination, precision attitude determination, orbital mechanics, mission planning and satellite geodesy. He has served on the Cockrell School of Engineering faculty since 1969. He has two years of industrial experience and has published more than 100 technical articles and reports. He is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, a Fellow of the American Astronautical Society, and the Science Team Leader for the NASA Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS).
