Welcome to the Campus Cat Coalition website! Cats that have never had any human contact are referred to as "feral". They have long been an issue on the UT-Austin campus. In the past, the administration periodically had the cats trapped and destroyed in an effort to eradicate them. It was only a quick fix and never really solved the problem. Eventually more cats showed up. So in 1995, cat-lovers from around campus united and formed a coalition. We convinced the administration to let us take over the care and control of the feral cats by implementing a more humane control practice (sterilization). They agreed. The Campus Cat Coalition is an all-volunteer organization. We are staff members and donate our spare time to the group. We manage the population of feral cats that live on the main campus and the Pickle Research Center. We are sanctioned by the University but do not receive funding from them - we run the program from contributions alone. We are a registered UT staff organization. Our group is currently under the umbrella of the Animal Make Safe Program of UT's Office of Environmental Health & Safety. The system we use to control the campus cat population is commonly referred to as "TNRM" (trap, neuter, return, manage). It's innovative, it's non-lethal and we have 13 years worth of statistics to prove that it really does work! We catch adult cats in cage traps and transport them to local veterinarians where they're examined, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and ear tipped (for identification). After a few days of recovery time they're brought back to campus and released into their home territory. We then feed and monitor them daily. Feral kittens under 6 weeks can be socialized. We catch them, get them nice and friendly then place them up for adoption. The purpose of our program is to decrease the number of cats on ourcampus. We do not add feral cats to our colonies from other locations. We are not a shelter or a rescue group. As of January 2008 there are approximately 20 remaining sterilized adult feral cats living on campus in small colonies. The number of cats has gradually decreased over the years. No new litters of kittens have been born here for the past 8 years! Our statistics show that the program is working and working very well! With these results, we're happy, the administration is happy, and most important of all, the CATS are happy! SPECIAL MENTION!
The Campus Cat Coalition was recently selected by the Board of Directors
of the Friends of the Forest Foundation to receive a $250 donation from
money earned at Eeyore's Birthday Party! The party is
an annual fundraiser, sponsored by the Friends of the Forest Foundation,
that benefits non-profit groups in Austin. Proceeds are given out to
local groups who rely on donations alone (like us)! This contribution, will be used to cover veterinary bills for
spay/neuters, vaccinations, and in cases where feral campus cats need special care.
Without this kind of support, our work would be impossible. Many, many
thanks to everyone who helped make this happen -- and the campus cats
thank you too! For more information on Eeyore's Birthday Party visit: http://www.sexton.com/eeyores/ |

This web
site is dedicated to Misty, UT cat # 3. She was trapped/spayed
and returned to campus in 1995. Five years later she became ill, was
taken to the vet and diagnosed with breast cancer. Misty spent her final days in the very comfortable home of the Head Cat Person of the Campus Cat Coalition. She went to Kitty
Heaven on September 25, 2001. She was an incredibly brave cat and is
sorely missed. Peace be with you Misty. |

Sorry, but we are not a rescue group or shelter.
We do not "take in" friendly, pet cats
and we do not relocate other feral cats into our colonies
(Our purpose is to REDUCE the number of cats here!)
