Although primarily an undergraduate teaching laboratory, the Aerospace Materials Laboratory is also used for graduate student instruction and research. The primary piece of equipment for the laboratory is an electromechanical universal testing machine. It is used for tensile and fracture testing of steel, aluminum and composite materials.

A servo-hydraulic universal testing machine is used for bending tests on ceramics and relaxation testing of polymers. Data acquisition and control has been automated using Lab View software. The laboratory also has one high temperature creep frame, two metallurgical microscopes with image analysis, two hardness testers, a temperature cabinet, axial and radial extensometers, a Charpy impact tester and three rotating bend fatigue testers.
