Steve is the Owner, President and Chief Engineer of Deep Space Systems, Inc. in Littleton, Colorado alongside his wife, and fellow UT alum, Michelle Bailey. In 2001, Bailey founded Deep Space Systems with the objective of supporting NASA’s human and robotic exploration programs. In the past nineteen years, Deep Space Systems has won numerous awards including The Most Innovative Company in 2019 during the Made in Colorado, Colorado Biz awards.

DSS is the prime contractor for NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services program and are developing the capability to deliver NASA and commercial payloads to the lunar surface, with a concentration on payload delivery, mobility and resource prospecting in the lunar Polar Regions.

Bailey received his BSBA in Aerospace Engineering in 1982 from the University of Texas at Austin. He then began his career as a Systems Engineer, Project Manager with NASA at the Johnson Space Center for over ten years. After working on the Space Shuttle program, he got involved with a series of Mars projects beginning with the Mars Sample Return mission in 1990. “That got me hooked on Mars, and hooked on exploration” he says. Following this Bailey held a number of leading positions with variety of prestigious companies before founding DSS in 2001.

DSS is interested in recruiting top talent for planetary exploration and resource utilization, with particular interest in multidisciplinary individuals that are interested in:

  • Software and embedded firmware (FPGA) engineering
  • Machine vision, neural networks, machine learning, practical artificial intelligence
  • Electronics, circuits, application of system on chip, system on module technologies
  • Mechatronics and robotics
  • Aerothermal and thermal protection systems
