AIAA UT: The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Student Chapter at the University of Texas at Austin
About AIAA

The UT Austin chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is a student organization for people with an interest in aviation and space. The AIAA itself is a worldwide organization of over 31,000 members, and is the largest professional organization devoted to the progress of aviation and space science technology. Here are just a few of the myriad reasons to join:

  1. Gives you another reason to go to WRW; keep up to date on what's going on in the department.
  2. Meet professors and other students.
  3. See cool presentations (aerospace engineers, astronauts, distinguished professors, industry professionals).
  4. Go on the field trips (a.k.a. plant tours) - As a member, most trips are paid for.
  5. Fun in the sun (volleyball at the park, picnics and campouts at the lake, bowling with faculty, etc.)
  6. The occasional broomball game against ASME (just to put those cocky MEs in their place!)
  7. Eat pizza at every meeting
  8. Looks good on a resume

AIAA has three committees that serve our members in three very different ways. These committees are all working to benefit YOU, so don't hesitate to send us constructive ideas about how to improve AIAA. If you find yourself just brimming over with ideas, you could send them in one at a time, but... Wouldn't you like to get credit if you have a lot of good ideas? Joining a committee means that you'll get a chance to put your ideas forward, which will move AIAA forward. Plus, it never hurts to have a little extra padding on your resume, and joining a committee is an easy way to accomplish this.

  1. Financial - The financial committee is responsible for keeping track of AIAA funds and organizing fundraisers. When you see donuts, samosas, and bagels for sale, it's all thanks to the financial committee! Join the committee if you enjoy crunching numbers, or if you like making a difference for the organization in a tangible way (more money in the bank means cheaper field trips!). Contact Arvind Kaushik or Emilio Hernandez.

  2. Social - As you might expect, the social committee is responsible for organizing social events for the semester. Traditionally, we have hosted broomball and dodgeball but are always looking for new ideas big or small. If you find yourself wondering "Why don't they have Super Smash Bros. tournaments?" or "Can't we tailgate?" then this committee is for you. Contact Bryce Ewalt, Bryce Caughron, or Krishna Vernkataraman.

  3. Student Involvement - SIC (pronounced "sick" as in "tight" or "sweet") is the committee that deals with volunteering. A fairly new committee, it's main purpose is to do the traditionally hard work of searching for community service opportunites for AIAA members. Volunteer opportunities range from Engineering Saturdays to cleaning up parks. If you are one of those people who hold goodwill dear and love to make a difference, then this committee is for you. IMPORTANT: To volunteer, you DON'T have to be on the committee! You just have to show up! Contact Caleb North or Kaitlin Decker
