Fine scale turbulence facility

This facility (under the fume hood in the photograph above) produces a turbulent flow where the finest scales of turbulence can be resolved by our 2D optical diagnostics. At the heart of the facility is a round jet, 1 inch in diameter, surrounded by a coflow of air. The jet issues into a square (3 feet by 3 feet) test section. The height and configuration of the test section may be modified by removing the walls and/or the entire top portion of the facility. The facility is designed to produce a Kolmogorov scale of approximately 0.6 mm in flows with Reynolds numbers of order 5000.

In the photo above, the flow facility is surrounded by equipment set up for high-resolution PIV and acetone PLIF measurements of the turbulent jet. A Spectra-Physics GCR150 laser (foreground left) is used to produce 266 nm UV light for acetone fluorescence. A Spectra-Physics PIV400 laser (foreground right) produces 532 nm green light for particle image velocimetry.
