User Accounts

All students are required to have an ENGR User Account to logon to the LRC systems. The account is valid on the Windows and Linux systems.

Eligibility

All ASE or EM majors, and students currently enrolled in a ASE or EM class are eligible to have an ENGR User Account.

Getting a User Account

New user accounts are created upon enrollment. Your account name will be the same as your UT EID. See the proctor on duty in the ASE/EM LRC to receive your temporary password. You must change the password upon your first log in to the system. If you have problems with your account please see Phillip in WRW 205A.

Account Policies

Changing Your Password

There are two options for changing your User Account password.

  1. On a Windows system, after you logon, press the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys and then click the Change Password... button.
  2. Use the web Change Password form (requires UT EID).

If you still need assistance with your password or account, ASE/EM majors should see Phillip Baird or Scott Messec in WRW 205A. Non ASE/EM majors need to go to the College of Engineering's Service Desk at ECJ 2.514.

Setting Up Printers

Each User Account will need to add a printer to their profile before printing. The LRC has two print queues available:

  1. LRCLaser
  2. LRCColor

See the Printing page for information on the print queues and how to add the printers.

Technical Details

Windows: User accounts are setup as roaming profiles meaning that your computer settings and files follow you as you use different PCs in the LRC. All files located in the My Documents folder and on the Desktop are stored on the server. Your home directory will be mapped to your user name as drive Z:.

Linux: The files saved to your Linux account are separate from those in your Windows account. The Linux account is shared between both Linux systems so your files will appear on either system.

File Management Recommendations

Windows: It is recommended that you store all your files in the My Documents folder or on your desktop. Files saved to local hard drive, like C:\temp, will not be backed up.

Public Folder Policy

The Public folder is a temporary file storage area. All files and folders older than seven days will be removed automatically.

If you currently have files or folders on the Public folder, you will need to move them to your home directory. To connect to the Public folder: The Public folder is not backed up.

See the File Server page for information on connecting to the Public folder

Backups

User Accounts are backed up, but is intended only for catastrophic recovery due to system problems. Users should make backup copies of their own data at regular intervals when possible.

Account Termination

Termination of accounts will occur automatically once graduation date has passed or the student is no longer enrolled in a ASE or EM class.
